Jose Zanine Caldas 'INFA' Armchairs
Before he became one of Brazil's most celebrated furniture designers, José Zanine Caldas spent his twenties building architectural scale models for Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa — work that gave him an instinct for volume and structure he'd carry into every piece he made. The INFA armchair, produced by Móveis Pekelman in São Paulo around 1955, shows that instinct in a lighter register: a lacquered metal frame wrapped in synthetic rope, built for both indoor and outdoor use, with a sculptural economy of line that turns a simple woven seat into something closer to a piece of structural drawing. Zanine Caldas is now held in major design collections and represented by galleries including R & Company and Carpenters Workshop Gallery — collectible design in the truest sense, and this pair offers an accessible entry point into a body of work that's increasingly hard to find.
Iron frame wrapped in nylon · Dimensions: 70cm x 80cm x 70cm · Brazil, 1950s · José Zanine Caldas for Móveis Pekelman · Price per chair
